If you’ve ever thought,
“Why is it so hard to start a workout routine?”
you’re not alone.
There are moments where you know moving your body would help…
and yet, actually getting started feels harder than it should.
Not because you don’t want to.
Not because you’re lazy.
But because something in your body and nervous system is making it feel difficult to begin.
And once you understand why it’s hard to start moving your body,
it starts to make a lot more sense.
There are times where I know my body would feel better if I moved.
I know it would help my energy.
I know it would help my mind.
And still… it feels hard to get started again.
“If you’ve ever wondered why it is hard to start a workout routine, even when you know it would help, you’re not alone.“
Not because I don’t want to.
But because something in my system feels… heavy.
Almost like the longer I’m out of movement,
the more I can feel everything that’s been building.
For me, it feels like this:
The energy becomes more stagnant.
The thoughts get louder.
The emotional weight feels closer to the surface… but without a place to go.
Almost like being in it… instead of moving it.
And that’s where it can feel hardest to begin again.
Because starting movement doesn’t just mean moving your body.
It can start to bring things up.
Sensations.
Emotions.
Awareness.
And if there hasn’t been a consistent channel for that energy to move…
it can feel like:
“If I start, I’m going to feel all of this.”
Even if that thought isn’t fully conscious.
You’ve probably heard that phrase:
“The issues are in the tissues.”
And while it can sound abstract, it’s actually something many of us can feel when we slow down enough.
Our bodies hold onto experiences.
Not just physically, but energetically and emotionally.
So when movement has been absent for a while…
it’s not just that we’re “out of the habit.”
It can feel like we’re sitting inside everything that hasn’t been moving.
And that can make the idea of starting feel bigger than it actually is.
Sometimes it’s just that the system has gotten a little backed up.
A little overwhelmed.
A little protective.
And instead of movement feeling like relief…
it can feel like:
“This might be a lot.”
I’ve heard versions of this from clients over time, too.
Not always in these exact words,
but in that shared experience of:
“I know it would help… but I can’t seem to get myself there.”
And when we look at it this way…
it starts to make a little more sense.
What I’ve learned—personally and in my work—is that this isn’t something to push through aggressively.
It’s something to meet.
To recognize:
There’s a reason this feels the way it does.
And sometimes just bringing awareness to that…
softens it.
Creates a little space.
Makes it easier to take the next small step.
Because what’s really needed isn’t force.
It’s a way for the energy to start moving again.
That might look like:
And for some people, it also means looking a little deeper.
Not in a way that overanalyzes…
but in a way that allows what’s been sitting there to be seen and supported.
Sometimes that stuck feeling is connected to something deeper:
And this is where different types of support can come in.
Not to fix anything.
But to help create a pathway for movement—physically, emotionally, energetically.
Whether that’s through:
It’s less about doing more…
and more about allowing things to shift.
If you find yourself in that place of:
“I know I should… but it feels hard to start”
Maybe it’s not something to judge.
Maybe it’s something to get curious about.
What am I feeling right now?
What might be sitting here?
What would feel like a small, safe way to begin?
Not all at once.
Not perfectly.
But gradually.
Because once there’s a little bit of movement…
things begin to shift.
Energy starts to circulate again.
The body feels a little more open.
The weight doesn’t feel quite as heavy.
If you’ve been in that space…
You’re not alone in it.
And you’re not doing anything wrong.
Sometimes it’s just a matter of understanding what’s happening…
and allowing yourself to meet it a little differently.
If this resonates with you, and you’re feeling called to explore what’s underneath, know that there are ways to gently support that process. Whether through energy work, subconscious exploration, or simply a new lens, there’s space to move toward what feels ready—when you’re ready.
